Free Cell Phones- Safelink Wireless
SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month to income eligible customers.
To Qualify:
The process to qualify depends on the State you live in. In general, you may qualify if...You already participate in another State or Federal assistance program such as Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps and Medicaid. Or your total household income is at or below 135% of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government. And no one in your household currently receives service from another phone carrier. And you have a valid United States Postal Address. In order to receive your free phone you must live at a residence that can receive mail from the US Post Office. Sorry, but P.O. Boxes cannot be accepted. In addition to meeting the guidelines above you will also be required to provide proof of your participation in an assistance program, or proof of your income level.
You can enroll online at www.safelink.com . To apply you will need your address and social security number. If you exceed the free airtime (68 minutes in Florida), you can purchase additional minutes.
SAFELINK WIRELESS® service is a U.S. government supported program for income eligible households provided by TracFone Wireless, Inc. TracFone Wireless is America’s largest and number one prepaid cell phone provider in the U.S.

The Safelink program is great. I am a student off at college and away from home and my family and I recently qualified. Since I am independent from my parents and have VERY little income coming in (Retail Part time :/) , this program really helps out. I never use the phone, unless I am in a bind, like in need of a ride to work or if I need to reach my boss or professors. It's my go to lifeline pretty much. The plan is ideal for someone in my situation and I am truly grateful that Tracfone is offering this program. It really helps out and I found it easy to use. But thats just me. Good luck to everyone.

I have been trying to get a hold of someone. My application does not go thru online. I went on the phone and they gave me the option to have an application mailed or faxed. I have asked for both and it's been two months and I still have not recieved an application.

I am not quite sure why you aren't being qualified. My grandparents did it and they qualified and received their phone within 2 weeks. They said that activating it was simple enough and the phone is pretty basic, so there is nothing confusing for them (the elderly and technology, sadly, do not mix). Try sending the app again, that's pretty strange that your having any difficulty at all with it. Anyways, they love the phone and only really use it to check in with my parents and in case of emergencies. Good Luck!

I have a TracFone from you and I have never been able to use it. I have been told that it was deactivated due to non-use. I haven't used it because it hasn't ever been activated. I just called yesterday and was told that you'd give me back June - August minutes, but I still didn't have those minutes after 1 hour and 20 minutes, and I had an emergency to come up and I had to hang up. I was told to call back today and make sure I had plenty of time to go through the entire process. I called today and was told that I can't get any minutes until Jan. 3, 2010. I asked to speak to a supervisor after being thanked for being a safelink customer. My response was I haven't been a customer yet. My I speak to your supervisor. I was transfered to a customer service rep. I'm furious about this, and I want to know what can/will be done about it.

Thank God for Safelink! I applied for my phone because late one night my car broke down. I did not have a cell phone, nor could I walk (I have spinal stenosis). I took a chance of wrecking my car driving it with out the serpine belt attached. The next day I applied for my phone. It arrived one week later. I am receiving my monthly minutes each month and an opportunity to buy extra minutes. I am very pleased with the phone and I have helped many low income people receive their phone. Some have gotten a job since employers have a way to reach them now. The next time my serapine belt went off my minivan I had my phone and I could summon help readily. Thanks to Trakfone and Pres. Obama

I don't understand why some have not received their phone yet? I applied on line and within 1 week my phone arrived! It was detailed in how to get started and everything was included. For those of us who need cellular service and can't afford it, it's a God Send!
P.s. If you are clicking the next button and nothing happens, double check how you entered the date of birth and make sure you only enter the last 4 digits of your social only. I messed up a couple of times and had to scroll to the top of the page to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Received phone qickly and and set up the account, however I started receiving a message infrequently that I could make emergency calls only or I was out of net work. I ahve a friend with the same phone, same phone, same plan and we have sat side by side and my calls would go thru as normal, but I would get the messages I mentioned above. When I called customer service, all I got was a runaround and them telling me that I was out of range of the tower etc and yet my friend sitting right beside me could make the phone call okay. I have made a call to the same number standing in the same location in my house and sometimes the call goes thru and later the same day make the same call--same location and get the same messages. The "customer service rep" then told me point blank that it was either me or I was out of range and that they would not send me another phone. This a government subsidized phone and the taxpayers are paying for it and receiving shoddy service at best. My advice to anyone is to run from this SafeLink thing as fast as you can. IT'S A BIG RIP-OFF. My next letter is to my two congressmen about this company and the better business bureau and the consumer affairs office. The service may be free but someone ismaking money on it and they're ripping someone off.

The reason that the phones didn t come to your homes is because of mail thieves. i suggest you contact your local postal authority.I have the same problem here. My phone won t send the 911 call out any way which is what i wanted it for.The phone breaks up so bad you cant even use it inside my mobile home.

I just received a replacement tracfone because my last one stopped working on me and I have been trying to retrieve my monthly minutes but I still have not received them.
No service support. Tax supported "free" phone came to one client of mine (a homeless, disabled veteran) after 4 months of trying -not working, and when it was reported, a new phone never arrived, even after being given tracking numbers, etc. Customer gave up. A second client never got his phone, either, and also gave up. Calls, emails, etc to the company numbers went unanswered and even pleas to Attorney Generals office, and local and federal representatives went unanswered. A TOTAL TAXPAYER RIPOFF!!!!!
