  • 2010 Sales Tax Holiday August 13 through August 15, 2010

Planning on purchasing books, clothing, footwear, certain accessories or supplies for the upcoming school year?

The Florida sales tax holiday may help you save money!

Florida law directs that no sales tax or local option taxes (also known as discretionary sales surtax) will be collected on sales of certain books, clothing, footwear, and accessories selling for $50 or less, or on certain school supplies (notebook paper, lunch boxes, computer discs, etc.) selling for $10 or less. This three-day tax exemption is in effect from 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 13, 2010, through midnight, Sunday, August 15, 2010. (The exemption does not apply to sales of books, clothing, or school supplies within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.) For a complete list of qualifying items click here.

While the program targets items typically used by students during the school year, it also applies to articles more commonly used by adults, including work uniforms, lab coats and tuxedos. Baby clothes and diaper bags are also covered.

Store coupons and discounts may be used to reduce the sales price of an item in order to qualify for the exemption. Check with individual retailers for policies and store hours.

  • New Unemployment Extension - What does it mean for You?

On July 22, 2010 President Barack Obama signed the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2010.  According to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation:

"Florida’s Extended Benefit (EB) period ended on June 5, 2010. Qualifying individuals will receive the benefits retroactive to that date if benefits lapsed. The Extended Benefits (EB) program pays up to 20 weeks of additional benefits to individuals who previously exhausted the up-to-79 weeks of regular state and Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits.  AWI estimates the Governor’s Executive Order will benefit approximately 250,000 long-term unemployed Floridians.

The new federal law also extends the deadline for establishing eligibility in the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program by approximately six months, retroactive to May 2010, and extends the phase-out date for the program to April 30, 2011.  The agency estimates nearly 900,000 EUC claims may be filed as a result."
        Also -

"Those who believe they may be eligible under the new dates should visit www.floridajobs.org or call (800) 204-2418.  Eligible beneficiaries will be able to begin certifying for any weeks to which they may be entitled within the next two weeks, once the agency completes necessary programming. Certifying online at www.floridajobs.org is the quickest and most efficient way to process payments."

  • First Time Pasco Student - Health Requirements

Do you have a child going to a public school for the first time this year in Pasco or Florida? You will need proof that your child's immunization records are up to date and a physical. Both are sometimes referred to as "blue (for immunization) and gold (for physicals) forms". However, not all physicians or health care facilities provide proof on blue or gold forms - the schools will accept either on any color of paper as proof.

You can get immunizations shots at either your child's physician office, a health care facility, or the Pasco health department. A list of of immunizations by age is available at the Pasco County School Board site. A schedule of Pasco Health Departments is here. Physicals can be performed at your child's physician office or a health care facility.

  • Gulf Oil Spill

Most of us are familiar with the oil spill off the coast of Louisiana.  There's now a web site to track the spill's dimensions.   Developed by NOAA with the EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Interior, the site, http://www.geoplatform.gov/gulfresponse/,  offers you a “one-stop shop” for spill response information.  The site integrates the latest data the federal responders have about the oil spill’s trajectory with fishery area closures, wildlife data and place-based Gulf Coast resources — such as pinpointed locations of oiled shoreline and current positions of deployed research ships — into one customizable interactive map.

The Center for Disease Control also has a page dedicated to the potential effects of the oil spill should it appear on your local coast line, here. The CDC mentions four possible categories that you may be exposed to hazardous substances related to the spill:
    • Air
    • Water
    • Food
    • Dispersants
